Ostuni, the white town, on its hill under a clear sky, with the sea beyond

Surroundings

Between the hill and the Adriatic: the dune park, the white town and the Itria Valley.

The house is in the countryside but close to a great deal: the beaches are five kilometres away, Ostuni eight, the trulli of the Itria Valley half an hour. Under a kilometre away is Montalbano, a village of about three thousand people between Ostuni and Fasano, with a pharmacy, cafés, restaurants and grocery shops.

The Dune Costiere park

Under a kilometre from the house, in Montalbano, is the park’s bike centre (Albergabici): from there you set off on foot, by bike, on horseback or in electric cars. Guided bike rides suitable for families leave every day; or you can rent a bike, or just pick up a map at the info point.

The sea at Torre Canne

The golden sandy beaches are 5 km away. At 6 km are the beach clubs of Torre Canne and the Ostuni coast, with umbrellas, loungers, bars and Wi-Fi; between them are stretches of free beach with the dunes behind.

Ostuni and Cisternino

Ostuni, the white town, is 8 km away: its old town is all lanes and lime-washed houses. Cisternino, 11 km, looks out over the Itria Valley, the land of the trulli; Alberobello is 30 km.

The Montalbano dolmen

A few minutes’ drive away, among the olive trees, stands a dolmen: a prehistoric tomb built from great slabs of stone.

On horseback

Six kilometres away, the Parco di Mare riding centre keeps sixteen horses of different breeds, for English and Western riding: rides out, show jumping, dressage and a pony school.

What this land grows

The plain between Ostuni and Fasano produces things you’ll only find here, worth looking for at markets and farms:

Extra virgin olive oil
organic, from the olive trees of the plain
Regina tomatoes
the keeping tomato, hung up in bunches
Torre Canne fiorone
the first fig of summer
Barattiere melon
a small melon eaten like a cucumber
Hill wine
from the vineyards around Cisternino
